What is NCCT Cervical Spine?
Non-contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) for cervical spine helps to visualize the bones in the back of the neck (cervical vertebrae/ spine). Cervical spine comprises of seven vertebrae in the neck area, the first vertebrae of the thoracic spine, and the disk spaces in between them. It is performed to know the cause of neck, shoulder, upper back or arm pain, as well as tingling, numbness or weakness in the arm or hand. It helps to detect fractures in the cervical spine and herniated discs.
Why is NCCT Cervical Spine done?
- • To detect the cause of any unexplained neck pain or upper back pain • To detect fractures, inflammations, or infections of the bones not visible on a simple X-ray • To detect and diagnose any suspected herniated disk, which is the commonest cause of severe back pain • To detect any malformations or genetic defects during spinal development in children • To direct intervention procedures like fine needle biopsy • To detect any infection, injury or inflammation of the soft tissues like muscle, and ligaments of the spine • To diagnose any suspected infection, osteoporosis, deformities or abnormal growth of the bones
