What is Holotranscobalamine/ Active Vitamin B12?
Active Vitamin B12 / Holotranscobalamin test helps diagnose the cause of anaemia. It also detects any kind of nerve damage and evaluates nutritional status in an individual.
The formation of red blood cells requires Vitamin B12. The active B12 test directly measures Holotranscobalamine (HoloTC), the biochemically active form of vitamin B12 that is used by the body. The acceptable range for active vitamin B12 (HoloTC) is 20–134 pmol/L ((picomoles per litre)).
High levels of Vitamin B12 are uncommon, but certain conditions like diabetes, obesity, or severe liver disease can cause the levels to rise. In the case of active vitamin B12 deficiency, it can be increased through diets like beef, liver, chicken, fish, low-fat milk, yoghurt, and eggs.

Interpreting Holotranscobalamine/ Active Vitamin B12 results
Interpretations
The normal Holotranscobalamine Active Vitamin B12 level is >35 pmol/L. However, a borderline low range will show 23 - 35 pmol/L, whereas, a deficiency will indicate towards <23 pmol/L.
