What is CECT SI Joints?

Contrast Enhanced Computerized Tomography(CECT) Scan of the SI joints (sacro-iliac joints) is a diagnostic procedure in which a contrast material is injected and the rotating beams of X-rays are used to create cross sectional images of the SI joint. This joint is formed between the triangular bone at the lower end of the spine and the right and left iliac bones of the pelvis, which can then be used to create a three dimensional image to detect and diagnose disorders of this joint.

Preparation for CECT SI Joints

  • Pregnant women should inform their doctor (and x-ray technician) as the radiations may affect the fetus. If needed, precautions can be taken to lower the radiation exposure to the fetus.
  • Depending on the area to be imaged, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown at the time of the X-ray.
  • Get the blood urea and creatinine test done to evaluate kidney function and to ensure safety of contrast before taking up the procedure.

Why Get Tested for CECT SI Joints?

  1. • To determine functioning and proper movement of the sacroiliac joints • To detect any fractures in the sacrum and iliac bones • To diagnose the cause of persisting lower back pain • To detect inflammation or infection of the joint and bones • To detect tumors or other masses in the sacroiliac region • To guide diagnostic procedures like biopsy or therapeutic procedures like placement of implants
