What is CT Pulmonary Angiography?

The Computed Tomography (CT) Pulmonary Angiography test is an imaging procedure where rotating beams of X-rays are used to create a detailed three dimensional image of the blood vessels of the lungs after injection of a contrast material to assess blood flow patterns and detect blockages or vascular damage.

Why is CT Pulmonary Angiography done?

  1. • To detect blockages of the blood vessels due to plaque formation or clots • To detect weak points of the pulmonary blood vessels or aneurysms • To detect narrowing of blood vessels of the lungs • To determine if shortness of breath is caused by inadequate blood supply to the lungs • To detect any malformations of the pulmonary blood vessels

Preparation for CT Pulmonary Angiography

  • Pregnant women should inform their doctor (and x-ray technician) as the radiations may affect the fetus. If needed, precautions can be taken to lower the radiation exposure to the fetus.
  • Depending on the area to be imaged, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown at the time of the X-ray.
