Overview of BNP

What is BNP?

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal-pro-BNP (NT-pro-BNP) are two proteins that the heart produces when it suffers a failure and when the condition leading to a heart failure is worsened the production of these proteins increase. The BNP blood test is conducted to measure the level of these two proteins.

Why Get Tested for BNP?

You should get this test done if you have symptoms  of a possible heart failure like shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, coughing with a wheezing sound, difficulty while sleeping, swelling around the ankle and sometimes chest pain. In these cases a doctor recommends a BNP test to assess the condition of the heart and to figure out whether medication or hospitalization is required.





What Results of BNP mean?

If the levels of the BNP proteins are on the higher side then it means that the condition of the heart is poor.
