What is High Sensitive CRP?

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant, mainly synthesized by the liver, which increases in the blood following the heart attack, inflammation, infection, surgery, or trauma etc.High-sensitivity CRP (Hs-CRP) test measures lower levels of CRP in the blood to predict the risk of Cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Hs-CRP can implicate low level of inflammation. A persistent low level of inflammation can result in a build-up of cholesterol and other lipids and can cause atherosclerosis and narrowing of blood vessels, which is often associated with CVD. The hs-CRP test accurately measures low levels of C-reactive protein to identify low but persistent levels of inflammation and thus helps predict a person's risk of developing CVD. High-sensitivity CRP along with lipid profile can be a useful test for screening the risk of CVD, heart attacks, and strokes. Studies have suggested that this test should be used for people who have a moderate risk of heart attack over the next 10 years.

Therefore, Hs-CRP is generally advised along with other tests such as lipid profile and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) to provide added information about the risk of heart disease.


What Results of High Sensitive CRP mean?

Interpretations

A desirable blood level of Hs-CRP is less than 1 mg/ml.

Low risk: less than 1.0 mg/L

Average risk: 1.0 to 3.0 mg/L

High risk: above 3.0 mg/L

Above 10 mg/mL: indicates acute inflammation

Q. How is this test performed?
This test is performed on a blood sample. A syringe with a fine needle attached is used to withdraw blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm generally from the inner side of the elbow area. The doctor, nurse or the phlebotomist will tie an elastic band around your arm which will help the blood vessels to swell with blood and hence makes it easier to withdraw blood. You may be asked to tightly clench your fist. Once the veins are clearly visible, the area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and then the needle is inserted into the blood vessel to collect the sample. You may feel a tiny pinprick during the procedure. Blood sample once collected is then sent to the laboratory.
Q. Is there any risk associated with this test?
There is no risk associated with the test. However, as this test involves a needle prick to withdraw the blood sample, rarely, a patient may experience increased bleeding, hematoma (blood collection under the skin) formation, bruising or infection at the site of needle prick.
