Overview
What is Bone Densitometry Whole Body?
Bone densitometry whole body, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DEXA, is a test used to measure how much calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. It uses two X-ray beams with differing energy levels aimed at the patient's bones. In this, DEXA scanning focuses on areas all over the body. Bone Marrow Density (BMD) is calculated from the absorption of each beam by the bone.
It is a simple, quick and noninvasive test used to diagnose osteoporosis (porous bone) and osteopenia (low bone mass). It also helps to determine if you are at a risk of osteoporosis and thus aids in assessing the risk of developing a fracture. It is considered as a gold standard test to check bone mineral density.
