What is CECT TM Joint?

Contrast Enhanced Computerized Tomography (CECT) Scan of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is a diagnostic procedure in which a contrast agent is injected and the rotating beams of X-rays are used to create cross sectional three dimensional images of the TMJ, the joint between temporal bones of the skull and the mandibles or jaws.

Preparation for CECT TM Joint

  • Pregnant women should inform their doctor (and x-ray technician) as the radiations may affect the fetus. If needed, precautions can be taken to lower the radiation exposure to the fetus.
  • Depending on the area to be imaged, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown at the time of the X-ray.

Why Get Tested for CECT TM Joint?

  1. • To locate and diagnose jawbone fractures • To assess articulation or movement of the jaws (jaw dislocation) • To detect any congenital anomalies (birth defects) of the TM joint • To detect any inflammation or infection of the TM joint or the surrounding connective tissues • To diagnose any tumors (abnormal growths) in this area
