Understanding H1N1 Qualitative RT-PCR
What is H1N1 Qualitative RT-PCR?
This test is used for the detection of H1N1 flu commonly called as swine flu. It spreads through by coming in direct contact of the respiratory droplets spread into air through coughing or sneezing by infected people. It has symptoms similar to a common flu such as body aches, chills, cough, fatigue, fever, headache, loss of appetite and sore throat.
The testing involves chest X-rays, routine blood tests and CBC test. RT- PCR test is also commonly used for the detection of H1N1.
Generally the infection might go away in a couple of weeks by taking proper rest, liquids and medications.
Young children, old age people, diabetic, kidney , hypertensive and immunucompromised patients are more prone to severe disease progression.
What is H1N1 Qualitative RT-PCR used for?
- Symptoms of swine flu in humans are similar to most influenza infections: fever (100 F or greater), cough, nasal secretions, fatigue, and headache.
- The incubation period for the disease is about one to four days.
- Swine flu is contagious about one day before symptoms develop to about five to seven days after symptoms develop; some patients may be contagious for a longer time span.
- The disease lasts about three to seven days with more serious infections lasting about 9 to 10 days.
