Understanding eGFR
What is eGFR?
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (EGFR) indicates the functioning efficiency of the kidneys on filtering. It can help us to detect chronic kidney disease (CKD).
In this procedure, a medical professional will take a blood sample from your arm by inserting a needle in your vein, which usually takes less than five minutes. You may have to fast or avoid certain foods before the test.
The normal range is a count of GFR 60 or higher. A count of less than 60 indicates kidney disease. Kidney failure is when the count is less than 15. An abnormal (elevated) level of EGFR may indicate kidney diseases, kidney failure, or accumulation of creatinine (toxins) in the blood. If your EGFR levels are high, preventive measures such as exercising, losing weight, and eating a healthy diet may prevent further damage.
