Methyl Malonic Acid Quantitative
What is MMA Quant?
The Methyl Malonic Acid (MMA) test is performed to detect mild/early vitamin B12 deficiency. High levels of MMA indicate deficiency of Vitamin B12. The test can also diagnose methylmalonic acidemia, a genetic metabolic disorder that is also rare.
Why is MMA Quant done?
The MMA test is performed when the patient exhibits signs and symptoms of a low Vitamin B12 level that include numbness, swollen body tissues, gait abnormalities, jaundice, irritability, cognitive impairment, peripheral neuropathy, fatigue etc.
Interpreting MMA Quant results
The normal MMA range is 0.08-0.56 µmol/L (0-4.7 µg/dL). If the MMA quantity exceeds this value, the patient may be suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency.
