Overview
What is CT Angiography Carotids?
A CT Angio - Carotids test is an imaging technique that helps diagnose narrowed or blocked carotid arteries. Carotid arteries supply blood to the large front section of your brain, located on each side of your lower neck just below the angle of your jaw. Blockage or narrowing of these arteries can cause symptoms such as dizziness, numbness in your arms or legs, and blurred vision.
The scan uses a contrast agent that highlights the abnormalities and gives clear images. You may feel a warm sensation when you receive the contrast agent intravenously. The scan may take 20-60 minutes. If the results show 50%-70% blockage, doctors may advise surgery. Increase your water intake to flush out the contrast material faster from your body.
Why is CT Scan done?
- • To evaluate any physical trauma or injury to the blood vessels • To evaluate any weak points in blood vessels or aneurysm • To check for blockages in blood vessels due to plaque deposition or blood clot formation • To detect the presence of any abnormal blood vessels • To assess the risk of stroke due to reduced blood supply to the brain • For planning and checking efficacy of treatments for blockages including stents and grafts
