What is Herpes Simplex Virus 1 DNA PCR?
The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 DNA PCR test is performed to detect the presence of the Herpes Simplex Virus 1, which is a virus that causes the sexually transmitted disease, oral herpes. The test is done by collecting a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, whole blood, swab, plasma, serum or vitreous fluid.
Why is Herpes Simplex Virus 1 DNA PCR done?
The doctor orders this test when a patient has symptoms like blistering sores around the mouth and genitals, itching and pain during urination (in case of genital herpes). The patient may also present symptoms like fever, fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite and swollen lymph nodes. If HSV spreads to the eyes, it can also cause eye pain, discharge and gritty sensation in the eyes.

Interpretations
If the result comes back as positive, it implies that either the person has herpes or that he/she has been exposed to the Herpes Simplex Virus 1.
