What is Filaria?

The Filaria test is performed to confirm a diagnosis of Filaria, as well as when an infection is suspected before symptoms of filaria appear. Filaria is caused by a parasitic roundworm called Wuchereria bancrofti and the test measures the level of antibodies against these parasites to determine if an infection has occurred.

Why is Filaria done?

  1. When symptoms of filaria appear including fever with chills and headaches, inflammation and swelling of the lymph nodes, progressive swelling of the legs and genitals to unnatural proportions
  2. To screen for the presence of the parasite if a person has been bitten by a mosquito and infection is suspected
