ओरेक्स क्रीम दो दवाओं का एक मिश्रण हैःकोलीन सैलिसिलेट और टैनिक एसिड. कोलीन सैलिसिलेट नॉन-स्टेरॉयडल एंटी-इन्फ्लामेटरी ड्रग्स (एनएसएआईडी) नामक दवाओं के एक समूह से सम्बन्ध रखता है. यह मुंह में दर्द और सूजन (लालीपन) का कारण बनने वाले कुछ रासायनिक मैसेंजर (प्रोस्टाग्लैंडिन) के स्राव को अवरुद्ध करके काम करता है. टैनिक एसिड एक एस्ट्रिंजेंट है जिसमें एंटीवायरल और एंटीबैक्टीरियल गुण होते हैं यह मुंह के छालों के ऊपर एक सुरक्षा कवच बना देता है.
