Tenecure M 500mg/20mg Tablet SR

Overview

Introduction

Tenecure M 500mg/20mg Tablet SR is a combination of two medicines that control high blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This helps prevent serious complications of diabetes such as kidney damage and blindness and may reduce your chance of having a heart attack or stroke.

Tenecure M 500mg/20mg Tablet SR can be prescribed alone or together with other diabetes medications. All diabetes medicines work best when used along with a healthy diet and regular exercise. The dose you are given will depend on your condition, blood sugar levels and what other medicines you are taking. Taking it with meals helps to reduce the chances of developing an upset stomach.

You should take it regularly, at the same time each day, to get the most benefit and you should not stop unless your doctor recommends it. It is controlling your blood sugar levels and helping to prevent serious complications in the future. It is important to stay on the diet and exercise program recommended by your doctor while taking this medicine. Your lifestyle plays a big part in controlling diabetes.

The most common side effects of taking this medicine include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, headache, and sore throat. Low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia) is a possible side effect if you are also taking other diabetes medicines like insulin or sulfonylurea, so you need to know how to recognize and deal with it.

This medicine is not suitable for everyone. Before taking it, you should let your doctor know if you have ever had kidney, liver or heart disease, problems with your pancreas, or if you drink a lot of alcohol. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking this medicine. Some other medicines can affect this one so tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking to make sure you are safe. You should try to avoid drinking alcohol as it lowers blood glucose. Your doctor will check your kidney function and blood sugar levels before and during treatment.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Vomiting

There are some medicines that can help you stop feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Upset stomach
Try taking your medicine with a meal or snack, or shortly after eating. It might help to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and to eat and drink slowly. Avoid foods which can irritate your stomach such as carbonated soft drinks, caffeine, fatty and spicy foods, mints and citrus fruits. Quit smoking and alcohol because they increase the symptoms. Do not eat for 3 or 4 hours before going to bed. Try raising the head of your bed at night or use extra pillows. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that may help, such as antacids, if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)
Try saline spray or nose drops. Taking steam inhalation or placing a warm wet towel on your face can also help. Use a humidifier if the air in your house is too dry. Using an extra pillow at night to lift up your head can also improve your breathing. If your condition does not improve, you should talk to your doctor. The doctor may be able to prescribe you certain over-the-counter medicines that can help improve your condition.
  • Coping with Sore throat
Try gargling with warm salt water as it can help soothe a scratchy throat and relieve the discomfort. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Consider lozenges or hard candy. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can dry out your throat and aggravate the symptoms. Also, avoid smoking or smoky places. Warm tea that is sweetened with honey can also soothe your irritated throat. Get plenty of rest and consider using a humidifier if the air in your home is dry. If it does not get better or get worse, talk to your doctor for advice.

How Tenecure M Tablet SR works

Tenecure M 500mg/20mg Tablet SR is a combination of two antidiabetic medicines: Metformin and Teneligliptin. Metformin is an antidiabetic medication (biguanide). It works by lowering glucose production in the liver, delaying glucose absorption from intestines and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin. Teneligliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor which works by increasing the release of insulin from pancreas and decreasing the hormones that raise blood sugar levels. This reduces both fasting and postmeal sugar levels. Together, they provide better control of blood sugar.

FAQs

Q. Is it safe to use Tenecure M?

Yes, it is safe to use Tenecure M if you take it for the prescribed duration and according to the dosage advised by the doctor. However, despite taking the prescribed dosage you might experience common side effects like nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, nasal congestion, sore throat, respiratory tract infection and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level). Hypoglycemia is relatively common in patients who are taking Tenecure M in combination with insulin or Sulfonylurea. Inform your doctor if you experience any persistent problem while taking this medicine.

Q. Can the use of Tenecure M lead to hypoglycemia?

The use of Tenecure M does not usually cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) on its own. But, it could occur if there is insufficient supplementation of calories while taking this medicine. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include nausea, headache, irritability, hunger, sweating, dizziness, fast heart rate, and feeling anxious or shaky. The symptoms are more likely to be noticed if you miss or delay your food, drink alcohol, over-exercise or take any other antidiabetic medicine along with it. Hence, regular monitoring of blood sugar level is important. It is recommended to always carry glucose tablets, honey or fruit juice with you.

Q. Can the use of Tenecure M cause nausea and vomiting?

Yes, the use of Tenecure M can cause nausea and vomiting. In case of vomiting, drink plenty of water or other fluids by taking small frequent sips. Talk to your doctor if vomiting persists and you notice signs of dehydration, like dark colored and strong-smelling urine and a low frequency of urination. Do not take any other medicine without consulting a doctor.

Q. Are there any specific contraindications associated with the use of Tenecure M?

The use of Tenecure M should be avoided in patients with known allergy to any of the components or excipients of this medicine. The use of this medicine is also considered to be harmful for patients with severe kidney impairment, liver impairment, congestive heart failure, lactic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Q. Can the use of Tenecure M cause lactic acidosis?

Yes, the use of Tenecure M can lead to lactic acidosis which is also known as MALA (Metformin-associated lactic acidosis). It is caused by increased levels of lactic acid in the blood. It is a very rare side effect associated with the use of metformin and therefore it is avoided in patients with underlying kidney disease, old age patients or who take large amounts of alcohol. Symptoms of lactic acidosis may include muscle pain or weakness, dizziness, tiredness, feeling of cold in arms and legs, difficulty in breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or slow heart rate. If you have these symptoms, stop taking Tenecure M and immediately consult your doctor.

Q. Can the use of Tenecure M lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency?

Yes, the use of Tenecure M can cause Vitamin B12 deficiency on long-term use. It interferes with the absorption of Vitamin B12 in the stomach. Deficiency of B12 may cause anemia and nerve problems. These may further cause a tingling sensation and numbness in hands and feet, weakness, urinary problems, change in mental status and difficulty in maintaining balance (ataxia). Consult your doctor if you experience these symptoms. Your doctor may advise monitoring of B12 levels and prescribe a vitamin B12 supplement if required.
