Calcitriol(0.25 mcg)

Calcitriol is a form of Vitamin D also called Vitamin D3. Vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the proper functioning of calcium in the body. It is used as a supplement in people with Vitamin D deficiency. It is also used to treat abnormalities of calcium and phosphate metabolism such as bone diseases in people with kidney problems (renal osteodystrophy), and weakening of the bones in women after menopause (post-menopausal osteoporosis).

How it works

Calcitriol belongs to a group of medicines called ‘vitamin D metabolites’. It is a naturally produced hormone that helps to control calcium levels in the body. It promotes calcium absorption in the intestines and retention by the kidneys thus increasing  calcium levels in the blood. It also decreases phosphate reabsorption by the kidneys consequently decreasing serum phosphate levels, parathyroid hormone levels and bone reabsorption.

Common side effects

Very common: High calcium levels in blood .Common: Headache, blood creatinine increased., abdominal pain, vomiting, urge to vomit, urinary tract infection.Uncommon: decreased appetite, rash

Elemental Zinc(7.5 mg)

Zinc is used to treat zinc deficiency which may cause slow growth in infants and children, delayed sexual development in adolescents, impotence in men, hair loss, diarrhea, eye and skin sores, loss of appetite and weight, delayed wound healing, decreased ability to taste food, and low alertness levels.

How it works

Zinc is an essential mineral. It is needed for the proper growth and maintenance of the human body and for immunity against infections. It is a part of various enzymes and hormones in the body.

Common side effects

Zinc along with quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics reduces the amount of both zinc and the antibiotic in the body.Thiazide diuretics increase the release of zinc through urine.Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

Elemental Calcium(250 mg)

Acute hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, hypocalcaemia, in hypocalcaemic tetany, osteoporosis prophylaxis, osteoporosis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, severe hyperkalaemia.

How it works

The skeleton acts as a major mineral storage site for the element and releases Ca2+ ions into the bloodstream under controlled conditions. Circulating calcium is either in the free, ionized form or bound to blood proteins such as serum albumin. Parathyroid hormone (secreted from the parathyroid gland) regulates the resorption of Ca2+ from bone. Calcitonin stimulates incorporation of calcium in bone, although this process is largely independent of calcitonin. The best-absorbed form of calcium from a pill is a calcium salt like carbonate or phosphate. Calcium gluconate and calcium lactate are absorbed well by pregnant women. Seniors absorb calcium lactate, gluconate and citrate better unless they take their calcium supplement with a full breakfast.

Common side effects

syncope, nausea, thirst, abdominal pain, anorexia, vomiting, hypophosphatemia., Hypotension, cardiac arrest, constipation, dry mouth, headache, sinus bradycardia

Expert advice

  • Do not take any other forms of Vitamin D unless your doctor suggests.
  • Take calcium supplements along with Vitamin D3 as suggested by your doctor.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (such as water) as it is important not to become dehydrated.
  • Avoid using antacids without your doctor's advice. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb calcitriol.
  • Consult your doctor if you notice a metallic taste in mouth, muscle or joint pain, headache or drowziness.
