Retain Injection


Overview

Introduction

Retain Injection is used to prevent premature labor in pregnant women in order to reduce the risk of giving birth too early (preterm birth). It prevents miscarriage and lower the risk of premature birth in women who have had one premature delivery in the past.

Retain Injection is administered only by or under the supervision of doctor. It should be taken as your doctor advice. Your doctor will decide how much you need to take and for how much time. You should take this injection for as long as it is prescribed for you.

The most common side effects of this medicine include local site reactions at injection site, nausea, itching, diarrhea, and hives. If any of these bothers you, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. It may affect blood sugar levels, so monitor your blood sugar regularly. It is better to inform the doctor if you notice yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine, or stomach pain while using this medicine.

Before taking this medicine inform doctor, if you have ever had any problems with your blood circulation or have diabetes, or any liver disease. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Nausea
    You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
    Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.

How Retain Injection works

Retain Injection is a progestin (female hormone). It works by modulating the immune response of the mother to prevent rejection of the embryo and allow its attachment to the uterus. This prevents miscarriage and helps lower the risk of premature birth in women who have had one premature delivery in the past.

Retain Injection is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
Breastfeeding
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Retain Injection is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.
Nonhormonal contraceptives are preferred in breastfeeding women, especially during the first 4 weeks postpartum
Driving
SAFE
Retain Injection does not usually affect your ability to drive.
Kidney
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
There is limited information available on the use of Retain Injection in patients with kidney disease. Please consult your doctor.
This medicine contains progesterone which can cause fluid retention in patients with underlying kidney disease.
Liver
UNSAFE
Retain Injection is probably unsafe to use in patients with liver disease and should be avoided. Please consult your doctor.

Quick Tips

  • Retain Injection is used in pregnant women to help lower the risk of giving birth too early (preterm birth).
  • It is only given to a woman who has had a preterm delivery in the past.
  • It is not for use in women who are pregnant with more than one baby (twins, triplets, etc.).
  • It is administered only by or under the immediate supervision of your doctor. Your doctor can start giving you the injection every week between 16 and 20 weeks and continue through week 37, or until you deliver.
  • It may affect blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly.
  • Inform your doctor if you notice yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine, or stomach pain. These could be symptoms of a serious liver problem.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you have pain in the chest, groin or legs, difficulty with breathing, sudden severe headache, slurred speech, sudden unexplained shortness of breath, a sudden loss of coordination, or vision changes while using this medicine.
