Oncyclo 100mg Oral Suspension

Prescription Required

Overview

Introduction

Oncyclo 100mg Oral Suspension is used to prevent your body rejecting a new organ after a liver, kidney or heart transplant. It works by weakening your immune system so that your body does not attack the new organ. It can also be used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis and a skin condition called psoriasis.

The amount of Oncyclo 100mg Oral Suspension you take depends on your weight, medical condition and what you are taking it for. Your doctor will plan the correct dose for you. Do not change the dose without talking to your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. It is better to take it, in the same way, each time and at the same time every day to get the maximum benefit. Keep taking these tablets for as long as you have been told to, even if you feel well. Stopping treatment may increase the risk of your transplanted organ being rejected.

The most common side effects of this medicine include headache, unusual growth of facial or body hair, high blood pressure, diarrhea and shaking or tremors. Because it lowers your immune system, you may also catch more infections than usual. Tell your doctor straight away if you develop an infection. For the same reason, you may be more at risk of developing some cancers, particularly of the skin. You should limit your exposure to sunlight.

Before taking this medicine you should tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, high blood pressure, gout (increased uric acid levels in the blood) or epilepsy. Also, tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking as they may affect the working of the medicine. This medicine should only be used in pregnancy if it is clearly needed. However, it is not recommended while breastfeeding. You will have frequent medical tests while taking this medicine to check your blood pressure, liver and kidney function and mineral levels. The results of tests may lead to changes in your dose.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

There are some medicines that can help you stop feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Increased hair growth
Speak to your doctor as they may be able to help you by reducing your dose or by prescribing an alternate medicine. If you are very bothered by this side effect, do these at home to remove or lighten the hair such as shaving, waxing, plucking, using hair removal creams or bleaching.
  • Coping with High blood pressure
You can reduce your blood pressure by eating less salt, eating more fruit and vegetables, reducing the amount of alcohol you drink, being more active and losing weight. You could also reduce your caffeine intake (found in tea, coffee and cola drinks). Also, if you smoke, seek advice about quitting. High blood pressure can be treated with a range of different medicines. You should ask your doctor whether you need medication. Keep in touch with your doctor and get your blood pressure checked regularly.
  • Coping with Loss of appetite
It is important to eat, even if you do not feel like it. You might try switching to smaller meals and frequent snacks. Try eating healthy and nutritious snacks that are high in calories and protein, such as dried fruit and nuts. It is important to drink even if you cannot eat. But, do not fill your stomach with liquid before eating. Eat when you are most hungry. Exercise such as a short walk may also increase your appetite. Talk to your doctor about possible medication or supplements if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Tremor
These symptoms can be a sign that the dose is too high for you. It may help to change your dose or take your medicine at a different time of the day. There are also exercises that can improve muscle strength, control and coordination. In terms of lifestyle, avoid caffeine (in coffee, tea and chocolate), alcohol, and ask your doctor about other techniques to help you relax and manage stress. Talk to your doctor if this bothers you. Your doctor may be able to prescribe you medicines that can help.

How Oncyclo Oral Suspension works

Oncyclo 100mg Oral Suspension is an immunosuppressant. It works by suppressing your body’s immune response to help accept a newly transplanted organ (e.g., liver, kidney or heart). In rheumatoid arthritis, this immunosuppressive effect reduces inflammation (swelling) of joints and limits joint damage. In psoriasis, it works by reducing the activity of certain immune cells that cause overproduction of skin cells, thus improving scaling and redness.
