Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatric evaluation is based on history, clinical symptoms, personality factors, ongoing psychosocial stressors and frequency and severity of symptoms. It requires direct interaction with the patient on a regular basis. Once diagnosed, a management plan is formed based on intensity and frequency of symptoms and associated biological and psycho social factors. A complete solution to ones problems in a single question is thus not possible. For second opinion, seek a proper consultation with another psychiatrist and take along your previous prescriptions.
The patient is my son suffering from bipolar disorder for the last 5 years. He consumes too much tea, ciggarates and ganja too. He is taking valporic acid 500 mg, lopez 2+1 total 3 mg and olanzpine 10 mg at night & valporic acid 500 mg at morning. I am unable to control him to stop taking too much ciggarates and ganja. Please advice me should I keep him confined in a room and stop accepting his demand for ciggarates and ganja or something else fir his betterment.
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Bipolar patients need constant encouragement and support. Ganja itself escalates mood symptoms. It's best that you enroll him in a psychotherapy program or for psycho social rehabilitation. Medicines may also need modification as the current doses are not adequately helping.
