Overview

Introduction of Larimef Tablet

Larimef Tablet is an antiparasitic medicine, used for the treatment of malaria. It works by killing the malaria causing parasite and stops the infection from spreading.

Larimef Tablet should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Take it with food to decrease the risk of stomach upset. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.

Some people may experience weakness, chills, vomiting, rash and itching, as side effects of this medicine. It may also cause stomach pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite and nausea. Please consult your doctor if these side effects persist for a longer duration. Inform your doctor if you ever had fits (seizures) or any problems with your kidney, heart or liver.

How to use Larimef Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Larimef Tablet is to be taken with food.

How Larimef Tablet works

Larimef Tablet is an antiparasitic medication which treats malaria. It works by increasing the levels of haeme in the blood, a substance toxic to the malarial parasite. This kills the parasite and stops the infection from spreading.

Pregnancy
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
Larimef Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Larimef Tablet is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
Driving
UNSAFE
Larimef Tablet may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive.
Larimef Tablet can cause dizziness, loss of balance and mental problems and this may affect your ability to drive.
Kidney
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
There is limited information available on the use of Larimef Tablet in patients with kidney disease. Please consult your doctor.
Liver
CAUTION
Larimef Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Larimef Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Larimef Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

It is not recommended for use in babies below 3 months and weighing less than 5 kg

Q. Is mefloquine an antibiotic/ a quinolone/ does it contain sulphur or sulfa/ contain quinine?

No. Mefloquine is an antimalarial drug with activity against malaria causing parasites. It is a quinine antimalarial and does not contain sulphur/ sulfa or quinolone

Q. Is mefloquine the same as doxycycline/ chloroquine?

No. Mefloquine is not the same as doxycycline or chloroquine. All three drugs have different mechanism of action and indications

Larimef is an antimalarial drug. It works by killing the malaria causing parasite by destroying the parasites at a crucial stage of development (asexual intraerythocytic stage)
