Hondrea 500mg Capsule

Overview

Introduction

Hondrea 500mg Capsule is used in the treatment of some kinds of cancer and to prevent painful episodes associated with sickle cell anemia. It may be also used to treat some other conditions. It is sometimes used with certain other medicines as part of combination chemotherapy.

Hondrea 500mg Capsule can be taken with or without food, but try to have it at the same time every day to get the most benefits. Your doctor will decide what dose is necessary and how often you need to take it. This will depend on what you are being treated for and may change from time to time. You should take it exactly as your doctor has advised. Taking it in the wrong way or taking too much can cause very serious side effects. It may take several weeks or months for you to see or feel the benefits but do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to.

The most common side effects of this medicine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and sore mouth. This medicine may reduce the number of blood cells in your blood thereby, increasing the susceptibility to infections. Regular blood tests are required to check your blood cells along with kidney, liver and heart function during treatment with this medicine.

Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have bleeding, liver, or kidney problems or are taking any medicines to treat infections. Many other medicines can affect, or be affected by, this medicine so let your doctor know all medications you are using. This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The use of effective contraception by both males and females during treatment is important to avoid pregnancy.

Side effects of Hondrea Capsule

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Hondrea

  • Increased bleeding tendency
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low blood platelets
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Increased bleeding tendency
Hold a gauze over the area that is bleeding and apply pressure. Holding an ice pack to bruises may make them fade more quickly. Seek emergency help if you are bleeding profusely or if the bleeding doesn’t stop within 15 minutes. If you are bleeding more easily than normal, try to be careful when doing activities that might cause an injury or a cut, as it may take longer to stop bleeding. Use a soft toothbrush and waxed dental floss to clean your teeth. See a doctor if you're worried about any bleeding.
  • Coping with Loss of appetite
It is important to eat, even if you do not feel like it. You might try switching to smaller meals and frequent snacks. Try eating healthy and nutritious snacks that are high in calories and protein, such as dried fruit and nuts. It is important to drink even if you cannot eat. But, do not fill your stomach with liquid before eating. Eat when you are most hungry. Exercise such as a short walk may also increase your appetite. Talk to your doctor about possible medication or supplements if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Low blood platelets
You will need a blood test to find out if your blood platelet level is low. If this medicine is causing your platelet levels to drop, your doctor may suggest an alternative medicine. There are also medicines that can boost your blood platelet level. Consider asking your doctor about this. A low platelet count can put you at risk for bleeding. Try to be careful when doing activities that might cause an injury or a cut as it may take longer to stop bleeding.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Upset stomach
Try taking your medicine with a meal or snack, or shortly after eating. It might help to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and to eat and drink slowly. Avoid foods which can irritate your stomach such as carbonated soft drinks, caffeine, fatty and spicy foods, mints and citrus fruits. Quit smoking and alcohol because they increase the symptoms. Do not eat for 3 or 4 hours before going to bed. Try raising the head of your bed at night or use extra pillows. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that may help, such as antacids, if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Vomiting
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

How to use Hondrea Capsule

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not chew, crush or break it. Hondrea 500mg Capsule may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Hondrea Capsule works

In cancer, Hondrea 500mg Capsule works by blocking an enzyme (ribonucleotide reductase) which is required for synthesis of DNA. This prevents the cancer cells from growing and multiplying. In sickle cell disease, it works by increasing fetal haemoglobin (HbF) levels in red blood cells (RBCs). This helps the RBCs assume a normal shape, improves blood flow and protects against complications such as painful sickle cell episodes.
