Frequently asked questions FOR GALVUS 50mg tablet

    Vildagliptin

    Q. What is vildagliptin?
Vildagliptin is an oral antidiabetic drug which belongs to the group of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It lowers the blood sugar levels by increasing the release of insulin and decreasing glucagon levels. It has a lesser risk of hypoglycemia compared to other drugs and does not cause weight gain.
    Q. Is vildagliptin safe to use?
Vildagliptin is safe if used at prescribed doses for the prescribed duration as advised by your doctor. However, there are some common side effects that you can experience with the dose advised, like a headache, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar level) when used with insulin or sulphonylurea, upper respiratory tract infection and nasopharyngitis.
    Q. Does vildagliptin cause weight gain?
No, Vildagliptin is not known to cause either weight gain or weight loss. Weight gain can happen when vildagliptin is used with other antidiabetic medicines like thiazolidinediones, sulfonylureas or insulin.

    Q. Is vildagliptin licensed with insulin?
Yes, Vildagliptin can be taken along with insulin. Using the two medicines together is beneficial as the addition of Vildagliptin can lower the insulin requirement and the risk of low blood sugar levels.
    Q. Does vildagliptin cause hypoglycemia?
Vildagliptin can lower blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). It happens more often if you delay or miss your food, do more than routine exercise, drink alcohol or take other antidiabetic medicine along with. So, regular monitoring of blood sugar level is important and be cautious of symptoms of hypoglycemia and keep glucose tablets, honey or fruit juice with you.
    Q. How is Vildagliptin different from teneligliptin?
Vildagliptin and Teneligliptin belong to the same class of drugs with a similar mechanism of action and efficacy to lower blood sugar and HbA1c levels. However, teneligliptin is once a day medicine, safe to use and need no dose adjustment in patients with kidney disease while Vildagliptin is used twice daily and needs a dose adjustment in moderate to severe renal failure.
    Q. Is vildagliptin better than sitagliptin?
Vildagliptin and sitagliptin are two different drugs which belong to the same group of drugs known as 'dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors'. Although vildagliptin and sitagliptin belong to the same class of medicines and have similar action with similar side effect profile, their effect may vary upon individual response. Always follow doctor's advice regarding its use.
    Q. How is vildagliptin metabolized?
Vildagliptin is mainly metabolized by hydrolysis and is the major elimination pathway for vildagliptin in humans, accounting for 69% of the dose. Kidney may be one of the major organs contributing to the hydrolysis of vildagliptin to its major inactive metabolite, LAY151. Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) contributes partially to the hydrolysis of vildagliptin.
