Furoped Oral Solution

Prescription Required

Overview

Introduction

Furoped Oral Solution belongs to a group of medicines called diuretics or water tablets. It is used to reduce the swelling (edema) caused by too much water in the body in people who have heart failure, liver or kidney disease. This medicine is also used to treat high blood pressure.

Furoped Oral Solution helps your body get rid of extra water and salt through urine. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines as per the dose advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food and should be taken at the same time each day. It is best to avoid taking this medicine within 4 hours of your bedtime to prevent having to get up at night to urinate.

It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. If you stop taking it without consulting your doctor, your condition may worsen. Lifestyle changes like reducing stress, restricting salt intake, and stopping smoking may help this medicine work better.

Common side effects of this medicine include dizziness, weakness, dehydration, decreased potassium level in blood Increased blood uric acid, decreased magnesium level in blood, and increased thirst. These are usually mild and disappear after a short time. Consult your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have any liver problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking it. Regular monitoring of kidney function tests and electrolyte levels is important while using this medicine. It may reduce the potassium level in your blood so your doctor may ask you to add potassium-rich foods to your diet (such as bananas, coconut water, etc.) or prescribe supplements.

Side effects of Furoped Oral Solution

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Furoped

  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Dehydration
  • Decreased potassium level in blood
  • Increased blood uric acid
  • Decreased magnesium level in blood
  • Increased thirst

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Coping with Weakness
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Eat a well-balanced diet to keep your energy levels up. Do not drink too much alcohol. Do not drive or use tools or machinery until you feel better. Other things that can help include doing some gentle exercise every day, prioritizing and pacing your activities and having a short nap if you need to. If you are still having problems after a week, speak to your doctor, as they may want to change you to a different type of medicine.
  • Coping with Dehydration
Make sure you drink enough fluids (not alcohol or coffee). Cooled or iced liquids may go down more easily. Eat moist food such as fruits, vegetables and soups. Use a moisturizing cream on your skin and a lubricating lip balm if your lips are dry.
  • Coping with Decreased potassium level in blood
You will need a blood test to find out if your potassium levels are low. Your doctor might suggest using a salt substitute which contains potassium. Some foods which are good sources of potassium include fruit (especially bananas), vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds, milk, fish, chicken and bread.
  • Coping with Decreased magnesium level in blood
You will need a blood test to find out if the magnesium level in your blood is low. If your medicine is causing this, you may need to stop taking it. To help manage low levels, ask your doctor about taking a suitable magnesium supplement. Drink plenty of water and fluids to stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and smoking as they can decrease the absorption of magnesium. Some foods contain higher levels of magnesium. These include almonds, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate and peanuts. In general, seeds, nuts, cocoa, beans, oily fish and whole grains are good sources. Talk to your doctor if the condition persists.

FAQs

Q. How is Furoped different from Torasemide?

Both Furoped and Torasemide are loop diuretics. They are used to treat high blood pressure and edema caused by an underlying liver, kidney or lung diseases. Unlike Torasemide, Furoped is also used in the treatment of hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood). Torasemide has a longer duration of action and is safer to use in patients with renal failure, as compared to Furoped.

Q. Should you drink a lot of water when taking Furoped?

It is advised to take an adequate amount of water if you are taking Furoped. This is because Furoped works by eliminating the extra fluid and electrolytes from your body by increasing the urine production. This elimination of fluids may increase the chances of dehydration if you sweat a lot, exercise vigorously or if the climate is hot. However, if you have kidney or heart problems, you must consult your doctor who will suggest the amount of water that you should be taking. Consult your doctor for any further query or concern.

Q. Can Furoped cause weight gain?

No, Furoped does not cause weight gain. On the contrary, you may lose weight as it makes your body get rid of the excess of fluids from your body.

Q. What if I take too much Furoped?

If you take too much Furoped, you may have certain side effects such as headache, irregular heartbeat, dizziness and temporary loss of consciousness. Additionally, you may notice increased thirst, causing frequent urination. Immediately contact your doctor if you notice any such side effects or feel unwell.

Q. How long will I need to take it for?

Furoped should be taken in the dose and duration prescribed by the doctor. Depending on the illness you are being treated for, you may have to take it for a long term, even for the rest of your life. Do not stop taking Furoped without consulting your doctor. Sudden discontinuation of the medicine may lead to worsening of your condition. For instance, your blood pressure may suddenly shoot up if you are taking it for hypertension (high blood pressure), or your swelling (edema) may worsen. However, if you require a dose adjustment or further assistance, consult your doctor.

Q. What other lifestyle changes should I make while taking Furoped?

Lifestyle changes play a major role in keeping you healthy. Stop smoking and taking alcohol as this helps in lowering your blood pressure and preventing heart problems. Exercise regularly and take a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables and fat-free products. Avoid taking excess salt in your diet. Practice yoga or meditation and find ways to reduce or manage stress in your life. Ensure that you have a sound sleep every night as this also reduces your stress and hence helps in keeping your blood pressure normal. Consult your doctor if you need any further help to get maximum benefit of Furoped and to keep healthy.

Q. Can I stop taking Furoped if my blood pressure has lowered down?

No, you should not stop taking Furoped even if your blood pressure is controlled. Sudden discontinuation of medicine may increase your blood pressure again and the chances of getting a heart attack and stroke may also increase. Consult your doctor if you are having any side effects or if you want to come off Furoped. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine for controlling your blood pressure or may suggest ways to cope up with the side effects. You should understand that you need Furoped to prevent further complications and therefore, you must not stop taking it without consulting your doctor.
