It is not known whether this medicine is safe for use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so please take advice from your doctor. FAQs

Q. Is it ok to take Folmaa when not pregnant?

Generally, folic acid requirements are met from the diet and additional supplements are not required. It is recommended to take Folmaa only when you have a deficiency of folic acid. This applies for everyone except the pregnant females. Females who want or might become pregnant are advised to take Folmaa during a period from at least 4 weeks before pregnancy up to 3 months of pregnancy.

Q. Can Folmaa cause weight gain?

It has been observed in a study on animals that excess Folmaa may lead to weight gain and fat accumulation if given along with a high fat diet. But when taken along with a normal or low fat diet, there was no gain in weight even with excess Folmaa. In humans, similar studies have not been conducted and therefore knowledge regarding weight gain is lacking. To be on the safe side, avoid excess Folmaa and if you are on Folmaa eat a low fat meal.

Q. How long does Folmaa take to work?

Folmaa usually starts working within a few hours of taking it. If you are taking it for Folmaa deficiency anemia, you may start feeling better after a few weeks of taking it. In case you are taking it during pregnancy, you may not notice any difference but this does not mean that the dose is not working. Continue taking Folmaa as long as recommended by your doctor.

Q. Why should women start taking Folmaa before they become pregnant?

The structure (neural tube) from which the central nervous system develops (brain and spinal cord) is formed during the first four weeks of pregnancy. In most cases, this occurs when women do not know that they are pregnant. Full closure of the neural tube occurs during the end of the fourth week of pregnancy. If this closure does not take place or is only partial, this is called a neural tube defect. Folmaa has been found to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, and therefore, to prevent this defect women should start Folmaa before four weeks of pregnancy.

Q. Can I breastfeed while taking Folmaa?

Yes, you can breastfeed while taking Folmaa as it is not harmful for the baby. Folmaa is naturally found in the breast milk. Though its initial levels in the breast milk are low, it rises eventually. Since it is actively secreted in breast milk, mother may take Folmaa every day to maintain the required levels. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions related to nutrient supplementation in breastfeeding.

Q. When should I take Folmaa, in the morning or at night?

You can take Folmaa anytime of the day, but try to take it at the same time each day. This will help you remember to take it. Take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The medicine should be swallowed as a whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, cut or crush the medicine.

Q. Can Folmaa make you sick?

Generally, Folmaa is well tolerated and no side effects are reported in the majority of people. However, some may experience stomach and intestinal problems which include nausea (feeling sick), loss of appetite, bloating and excessive passing of gas. It may also worsen the symptoms of co-existing vitamin B12 deficiency. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor but do not stop taking Folmaa.

Q. How long do I need to take Folmaa?

The duration of treatment with Folmaa depends on the reason you are taking it for. If you are planning your pregnancy, then you need to start taking it 4 weeks prior to pregnancy and up to the first 3 months of pregnancy. If you are taking it for Folmaa deficiency, then usually it is prescribed for 4 months, but you may have to take it for longer in case the deficiency does not revert. If you are taking it to reduce the side effects of methotrexate, then you may need to take it for as long as you are taking methotrexate. Consult your prescribing physician to know the exact duration of your therapy.
