It can be taken with or without food, but it is better to take Choltran 5 mg tablet at a fixed time.

Cholestyramine(5 mg)

Uses

Choltran 5 mg tablet is used in the treatment of increased cholesterol levels in blood.

How it works

Choltran 5 mg tablet binds to bile acids and prevents their reabsorption from the intestine. The liver then produces more bile acids to replace that has been lost. Because the body use cholesterol to make bile acids, the level of cholestrol in blood is reduced.

  • Inform your doctor before taking the drug if you have phenylketonuria.
  • Children may require administration of folic acid with cholestyramine. Cholestyramine is not recommended for children less than 6 years of age.
  • Make sure you take other prescribed medicines atleast one hour before taking cholestyramine as the drugs may affect absorption of cholestyramine.
  • Avoid alcohol intake while taking this drug as it may increase the level of cholesterol in the blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you are or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
