How to use Azunate L Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet is to be taken with food.

How Azunate L Tablet works

Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet is a combination of two antiparasitic medicines: Artesunate and Lumefantrine which treat malaria. These medicines work by increasing the levels of haeme in the blood, a substance toxic to the malarial parasite. This kills the parasite and stops the infection from spreading.

Pregnancy
WEIGH RISKS VS BENEFITS
Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet may make you feel dizzy, sleepy, tired, or decrease alertness. If this happens, do not drive.
Kidney
Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.
Liver
Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Expert Advice

  • You have been prescribed Azunate L 480 mg/80 mg Tablet for the treatment of acute uncomplicated malaria that is resistant to other antimalarial medications such as chloroquine.
  • Finish the prescribed course, even if you start to feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection come back and harder to treat.
  • It should be taken with food or drinks rich in fat such as milk.
  • It may cause fatigue and dizziness. Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration.
  • If you vomit within 1 hour of taking the tablets, take another dose. 
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver or heart disease.
  • Tips to reduce the chance of being bitten by mosquitoes:
    • Wear light-coloured and covered clothing when you are outside after sunset.
    • Use insect repellent creams or sprays on parts of your body not covered by clothing.
    • Spray to kill any mosquitoes that may have entered rooms in spite of screening.
