ActHIB Vaccine

Overview

Introduction of Tetanus Toxoid

ActHIB Vaccine is combination medicine used in the treatment of tetanus and influenza (flu). It helps in developing immunity and stimulate the body's immune system to produce antibodies to protect against any future infections.

ActHIB Vaccine childhood immunization schedule of five doses is recommended. The primary series of three doses of DTP (DTwP or DTaP) should be given in infancy, with a booster dose of tetanus toxoid containing vaccine ideally at age 5 years and another booster as Td at 10 and 16 years of age. The type of tetanus prophylaxis that is required following injury depends on the nature of the lesion and the history of previous immunizations. However, no booster is needed if the last dose of the primary series, or of subsequent booster injections, was given less than 5 years ago for dirty wounds or less than 10 years ago for clean wounds.

The most common side effect is pain at the site of the injection. This pain is a mild reaction to the injection and it should fade within a few days

Hib vaccine should be administered 14 or more days before splenectomy if possible.
