The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not known. Type 1 or juvenile diabetes is autoimmune in nature. This means that in type 1 diabetes, the body’s own immune system, which normally fights harmful bacteria and viruses, mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Since the body of these patients lacks the ability to produce insulin, the sugar cannot be sent into the cells, leading to increased concentration in the blood.

Is it possible that a type 1 diabetic patient has insulin resistance?
1 Answer
Type 1 diabetes or diabetes mellitus type 1 is an auto-immune disease in which the activated immune system destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. The destruction of insulin producing cells further results in increase in glucose levels in blood and urine. Although insulin resistance is a key feature of type 2 diabetes, research has shown that people with type 1 diabetes can also have insulin resistance. Having type 1 diabetes with insulin resistance is also referred to as double diabetes. Obesity is the major risk factor for type 2 diabetes which leads to insulin resistance, though type 1 diabetes does not occur due to obesity. However, people with the condition may become obese, which in turn can lead to insulin resistance. Other than obesity, insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes people may be due to several genes that make them more likely to develop insulin resistance. Research has also suggested that people with type 1 diabetes having insulin resistance are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
