KHOOBSURAT NAJMA<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>What is Cervical cancer?<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cervical cancer is the cancer of the opening of uterus or womb, known as cervix and is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Indian women. Every seven minutes a woman dies due to cervical cancer in India.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>What causes Cervical cancer?<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most common cause for cervical cancer is infection with a virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) transmitted through sexual contact.<\/p>\n<p>Risk factors include poor local hygiene, not enough time gap between children, low nutrition levels and early marriage.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Symptoms:<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In early stages (even in the precancerous stages), cervical cancers usually do not cause symptoms. In the later stages, the symptoms include bleeding after sexual intercourse, bleeding between menstrual cycles and irregular periods.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Detection:<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Early detection plays a key role in cancer treatment. Pap smear is a simple, painless and noninvasive test for early detection of cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Pap smear is recommended for all women above 30 years of age and has to be repeated every 1-3 years.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Prevention:<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Awareness is the key to prevent cervical cancer. It can be prevented by vaccination between 10-26 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Two vaccines are available in India, Gardasil\u2122 (marketed by Merck) and Cervarix\u2122 (marketed by Glaxo Smith Kline). The vaccine dose is 0.5 mL given through an intramuscular injection.<\/p>\n<p>Gardasil\u2122 is given in three doses, at 0, 2 and 6 months and at 0, 1 and 6 months in the case of Cervarix\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>If there is a female in your family between 10-26 years of age, do consult a gynecologist for advice regarding the vaccine.
