It could be osteoporosis!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1mg.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/osteoporosis-2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Image of bone loss\/osteoporosis caused due to lack of nutrients\" width=\"610\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>By Dr. Khoobsurat Najma<\/h4>\n<p>About 50 million people in India have osteoporosis or low bone mass. 80% of urban Indian population is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1mg.com\/generics\/vitamin-d-210954\">vitamin D<\/a> deficient.<\/p>\n<h4>What is osteoporosis?<\/h4>\n<p>Bone is composed of tissue and mineral. In osteoporosis, there is loss of both mineral and tissue. Osteoporosis weakens the bone and results in frequent fractures (breaks) in the bones.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Osteoporosis can strike at any age.<\/li>\n<li>Osteoporosis affects both men and women.<\/li>\n<li>Women and men equally begin to lose bone mass in their mid-30s, after menopause women have faster bone loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Risk factors<\/h4>\n<p>Most important risk factor is <strong>Menopause.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other risk factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women are at higher risk than men<\/li>\n<li>Family history<\/li>\n<li>Small body frame<\/li>\n<li>Hypothyroidism<\/li>\n<li>Calcium and Vitamin D deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Sedentary lifestyle<\/li>\n<li>Excessive alcohol intake<\/li>\n<li>Smoking,<\/li>\n<li>Certain medications (heparin, anti-seizure medications and long-term use of oral steroids)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Symptoms<\/h4>\n<p>There are no symptoms in early stages. Once bones are weakened, symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backache<\/li>\n<li>Loss of height over time<\/li>\n<li>Stooped posture<\/li>\n<li>Bone fracture that occurs easily:\u00a0Most common fracture sites are\u00a0<strong>wrist, spine, shoulder and hips<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Diagnosis<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Bone mineral density scan (X ray) called <strong>DEXA<\/strong> (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blood tests<\/strong>: serum Vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Screening for osteoporosis<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Screening is recommended for:\n<ul>\n<li>Women &gt; 65 years<\/li>\n<li>Postmenopausal women &lt; 65 years at risk for osteoporotic fractures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Screening is done using<strong> DEXA<\/strong> scan<\/li>\n<li>Density is measured by T-score.<\/li>\n<li>T-score <u>&lt; <\/u> -2.5 indicates osteoporosis.<\/li>\n<li>T-score -1 to-2.5 indicates milder form of disease and high risk for osteoporosis.<\/li>\n<li>In patients with negative results, DEXA scan be repeated every 2 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Prevention<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Building strong bones<\/strong> is the best defense against osteoporosis<\/li>\n<li>Encourage children to <strong>drink milk<\/strong> and <strong>play in the sun<\/strong> to ensure adequate calcium, vitamin D synthesis and exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Take diet rich in<strong> protein and calcium<\/strong> along with calcium supplements.<\/li>\n<li>Spend <strong>10-15 minutes in sun<\/strong> every day to help body produce Vitamin D.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vitamin D<\/strong> is found in eggs, milk and oily fish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exercise daily<\/strong> (30 minutes) to strengthen bones.
