A spicy meal can make you drink more than a glass of water! A strenuous workout is never complete without sipping some water in between!
If you’ve been dealing with excessive thirst that just won’t let up, you’re not alone – and it’s worth understanding why.
It’s quite common to feel quite thirsty when out in the hot sun or after a workout routine. However, in some cases, drinking a glass or two of water fails to subside the urge, which should not be ignored. This phenomenon occurs because excessive thirst or drinking water constantly can be a sign of an underlying health issue. Here are some of the common causes of excessive thirst, which is also known as polydipsia.

Here’s a common myth worth busting: By the time you actually feel thirsty, you may already be slightly dehydrated. People with polydipsia may drink 6 litres or more of fluids every day. It is often accompanied by polyuria, a condition in which an adult passes 2.5 litres or more of urine within 24 hours.

However, frequent thirst or excessive thirst could be a symptom of a serious health condition, such as the following:

1. It is often the first noticeable but most ignored symptom of diabetes mellitus. In people suffering from diabetes, the pancreas, which produces the hormone insulin, either fails to make enough insulin to meet the body’s requirement or the body fails to utilize the insulin produced by the pancreas. As a result, there is an excess of glucose in the body which causes high levels of glucose to circulate in the blood and urine.

An excess of glucose in the urine draws more water to maintain the concentration of glucose in the body. As more water is absorbed, you tend to pee more often. Frequent urination causes loss of water from the body, which in turn makes you thirsty to replenish the lost water. Not just excessive thirst and urination are symptoms of diabetes, which can also lead to excessive fatigue, excessive hunger, blurry vision and slowed healing of cuts and bruises.

Book A Diabetes Screening Test To Know Your Blood Glucose Level NOW!

3. However, both the conditions are different. Diabetes insipidus is a rare condition which is characterized by extreme thirst and frequent urination (dilute and odourless urine). Polydipsia is one of the major symptoms of diabetes insipidus along with dehydration. It is a condition in which the kidneys’ regulation of fluid is impaired.

The hypothalamus, part of our brain, produces a hormone known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which helps in regulating the fluid balance in the body. But in people suffering from diabetes insipidus, fluid regulation is impaired as the body fails to produce enough hormones to meet the requirement. As the fluid balance is affected, an excess amount of water is pulled by the kidneys, which in turn is excreted through urine and makes you feel thirsty.

If you’ve been brushing off that constant thirst, you should read this next: Thirsty Too Often? Your mouth might become dry when the glands in the mouth that produce saliva fail to function properly. Dryness in the mouth can be caused by tobacco, nervousness, anxiety, and breathing with your mouth open (especially when sleeping). The other factors that might lead to dry mouth include certain medications, damage of the nerves in the head or neck region and cancer treatment.

Some common symptoms that might indicate dry mouth, along with polydipsia, include bad breath, changes in taste, irritated gums, thick saliva, and trouble chewing. Staying hydrated might fail to improve the symptoms as it is important to treat the root cause of the condition. So, consulting a doctor might be a sensible idea to find out the cause and get it treated.

5. Anemia

According to the US National Health, Lung and Blood Institute, severe anemia might lead to excessive thirst. Anemia is a condition in which there are low levels of healthy red blood cells due to the production of defective red blood cells. This condition, in turn, causes a lack of oxygen to various organs of the body. It also causes loss of fluids from the body, which is the reason why severe cases of anemia lead to polydipsia.

Anemia can be caused due to a lack of iron or vitamin B12 in the body. The common factors that increase the risk of anemia include poor diet, heavy bleeding, or certain diseases. The signs and symptoms of anemia include dizziness, feeling tired, sweating and pale face/skin. If you experience any of these signs, it is wise to consult a doctor at the earliest.

You might not always treat polydipsia simply by replenishing your body with lost water. It might also be a sign of a serious health complication that requires treatment. Hence, consult a doctor to find out the cause of excessive thirst and treat it immediately.

When Is Excessive Thirst Normal, And When Is It A Red Flag?

It’s natural to wonder where the line is between “I just need a glass of water” and “Something’s actually wrong.” Here’s a simple way to think about it.

Normal thirst usually goes away once you drink water. You might feel parched after a workout, a walk in Delhi’s summer heat, or a plate of spicy chaat, but a glass or two settles it within minutes. This kind of thirst is your body’s way of asking you to top up fluids you’ve lost through sweat, urine, or salty food.

Polydipsia is different. It doesn’t ease up no matter how much you drink. You might find yourself reaching for water every few minutes, waking up at night just to drink, or going through several litres a day without feeling satisfied. That persistence is the real warning sign, not the thirst itself.

When Should You See a Doctor for Excessive Thirst?

Thirst that doesn’t improve even after drinking plenty of water for a couple of days

Thirst paired with frequent urination, especially at night

Unexplained weight loss alongside constant thirst

Thirst along with fatigue, blurred vision, or slow-healing wounds

A dry mouth that water doesn’t seem to fix

None of these symptoms confirm a diagnosis on their own. But together, they’re a strong enough pattern that a basic blood glucose test or a chat with your doctor can save you months of guessing. Catching diabetes or diabetes insipidus early almost always makes management easier later on.

It also helps to rule out the simple stuff first. Are you on a new medication? Did you just start a high-protein or high-salt diet? Has the weather turned unusually hot? Occasionally the answer is that straightforward. But if you’ve checked all the obvious boxes and you’re still chugging water without relief, that’s your cue to get checked out rather than wait it out.

If your thirst is harmless, here’s how to keep it satisfied the desi way: 7 Tasty And Healthy Desi Thirst Quenchers You Must Try!

FAQs

Is excessive thirst always a sign of diabetes?

No. While it’s one of the earliest signs of diabetes, excessive thirst can also come from dehydration, dry mouth, anemia, certain medicines, or diabetes insipidus.

How much water is considered “too much” thirst?

There’s no fixed number.
