{"id":27598,"date":"2017-07-06T13:00:34","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T07:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.1mg.com\/articles\/?p=27598"},"modified":"2017-07-07T17:25:49","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T11:55:49","slug":"high-sugar-pregnancy-linked-asthma-risk-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.1mg.com\/articles\/high-sugar-pregnancy-linked-asthma-risk-child\/","title":{"rendered":"High Sugar Consumption During Pregnancy Linked To Asthma Risk In The Child"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27599 size-full\" title=\"High Sugar Consumption During Pregnancy Linked To Asthma Risk In The Child\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1mg.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rsz_shutterstock_609595997.jpg\" alt=\"High Sugar Consumption During Pregnancy Linked To Asthma Risk In The Child\" width=\"630\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Women taking too much sugar during pregnancy could be doubling the chance of their kid&#8217;s tendency to develop asthma.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-In a study that involved around 9000 pairs of mothers and their children, data from a world leading cohort study on birth was studied (the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), also known as &#8216;Children of the 90s&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p>-This study enrolled mothers who were pregnant in the early 90\u2019s for the study and has been ever since following up their offspring.<\/p>\n<p>-The researchers examined any association between intake of free sugar by mothers during their pregnancy and development of asthma and allergy in kids when they reached 7 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>-While the study showed only weak evidence for a link between free sugar intake in pregnancy and asthma overall, there were however strong positive associations with allergy and allergic asthma.<\/p>\n<p>-When the researchers compared the 20% of mothers with the highest sugar intake versus the 20 percent of mothers with the lowest sugar intake, they observed an increased risk of 38% for allergy in the offspring (73% for allergy to two or more allergens) and 101% for allergic asthma.<\/p>\n<p>-The researchers are of the view that the sugar link with asthma may be explained by high intake\u00a0of fructose triggering an immune response leading to inflammation in developing lungs.<\/p>\n<p>-Since this is an\u00a0observational study, it does not prove that high sugar intake by mothers is the cause of allergies or asthma in children.
