In this role, zinc supports the development and function of immune cells that help the body recognize and respond to infections [1,2].
Zinc is particularly important for innate immunity, the body’s first line of defense against infection, and for adaptive immunity, which mounts specific responses to particular pathogens. Zinc deficiency affects the proper functioning of immune cells, including those connected to the immune response (T and B cells), natural killer cells, and inflammation-related cells [2,3].

However, this doesn’t mean high doses of zinc will result in a sufficient increase in immune system performance. Zinc works within a relatively narrow physiological range, and excessive intake can also interfere with normal immune function [3,4].

What Does The Evidence Say About Zinc For Immunity?

Zinc is especially beneficial for someone who is zinc-deficient or has insufficient dietary zinc intake.
