If you have been diagnosed with chikungunya or if you have an undiagnosed high grade fever with body aches do not take aspirin, Ibuprofen or any other painkiller without your doctor’s approval.<\/strong><\/p>\n – Even if your dengue test is negative,<\/strong> you should refrain from using painkillers as your fever could be due to chikungunya.<\/p>\n – Taking these medicines may cause kidney or liver problems<\/strong>\u00a0 in elderly and in people with pre-existing kidney problems.<\/p>\n -Symptoms of chikungunya include\u00a0Sudden high-grade fever (104\u00b0F), severe joint pains and rash, headache and excessive weakness.<\/p>\n -Recent outbreaks have reported\u00a0kidney malfunction and liver problems<\/strong>\u00a0in elderly patients and in people with pre-existing kidney problems.<\/p>\n THINGS TO REMEMBER<\/strong><\/p>\n – Rest as much as possible.<\/p>\n -Most people recover within a week or so.<\/p>\n Keep the body temperature below 102\u00b0F.<\/p>\n Take paracetamol<\/strong> for fever as advised by the doctor<\/p>\n Do not take painkillers<\/strong> like aspirin, ibuprofen as they could cause or worsen kidney and liver problems.<\/p>\n Take large amounts of fluids (3-4 liters\/day) in the form of water, soup, milk, juice.<\/p>\n Keep a close watch on urine output<\/strong>. Low urine output could an indicator of kidney problems.<\/p>\n If you have severe loss of\u00a0appetite\u00a0or yellowish discoloration of eyes<\/strong>, it could indicate liver damage.
