You’re trying to apply sunscreen to a wriggling, impatient child who wants to be anywhere but standing still. And on top of the logistics, there’s the actual decision of which sunscreen to buy in the first place. The options are overwhelming, and the marketing on most of them doesn’t help you make a better choice; it just makes you more confused.

Here’s what actually matters. Kids’ skin is not the same as adult skin. It’s thinner, more absorbent, and more reactive, which means ingredient choice matters significantly more than it does when you’re buying for yourself. Getting this right is worth the extra ten minutes of research.

Why Sun Protection For Kids Is Not Optional

Let’s be honest about something first. Most of us grew up slathering on sunscreen only when we were headed to the beach. Everywhere else, it was an afterthought. And for a lot of parents today, it still is.

But the science on this is pretty clear, and it’s worth paying attention to.

Sun damage doesn’t announce itself. It builds up quietly over years and decades and shows up much later as dark spots, premature ageing, and in more serious cases, skin cancer. Research shows that around 23% of a person’s lifetime UV exposure happens before the age of 18. [1] Think about that for a second. Nearly a quarter of all the sun damage your child will ever accumulate in their lifetime is happening right now, in childhood, on school runs, at birthday parties, during cricket practice, on regular Tuesday afternoons.

And it gets more sobering. Having more than five sunburns over a lifetime doubles the risk of developing melanoma. [1] That’s not a distant, worst-case-scenario statistic. It’s a real number that applies to real kids.

The American Academy of Dermatology is pretty unambiguous about this. All children, regardless of skin tone, should wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. [2] This includes Indian skin tones. Darker skin has more melanin, which offers some natural protection, but it does not make anyone immune to UV damage or skin cancer. Every child needs protection, full stop.

The Age Rule You Need To Know First

Babies under six months old should not have sunscreen applied to their skin at all. [3]

Their skin barrier is still developing, their surface-area-to-body-weight ratio is significantly higher than that of adults, meaning more absorption per application, and their systems are not equipped to process chemical sunscreen ingredients safely. For babies under six months, the answer is protective clothing, shade, hats, and avoiding peak sun hours between 10 am and 4 pm.

From six months onwards, you can start applying sunscreen. And at this stage, mineral sunscreen is the recommended choice by most paediatric dermatologists.

Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreen: Which One For Kids?

This is the most important decision you’ll make when choosing a sunscreen for your child.

Mineral sunscreens, also called physical sunscreens, contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. They sit on top of the skin and physically block and scatter UV rays like a shield. They start working immediately on the application, they don’t penetrate the skin in the way chemical ingredients do, and both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are classified as generally recognised as safe and effective by the FDA. [4]

Chemical sunscreens work differently. They absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. They tend to feel lighter and leave no white cast, which makes them more cosmetically appealing. But they need 15 to 20 minutes to become effective after application, and some of their active ingredients, particularly oxybenzone and octinoxate, have raised concerns about hormonal disruption in animal studies. [5] Human studies haven’t confirmed these effects conclusively, but the FDA has stated that these ingredients need more research before they can be fully cleared.

For babies, toddlers, and younger children, paediatric dermatologists consistently recommend mineral sunscreen. [4] It’s the safer choice when you’re dealing with thinner, more absorbent skin that’s still developing its barrier function. For older children and teenagers, chemical sunscreen is generally considered acceptable.

If your child has eczema or sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen is almost always the better option. It doesn’t sting the eyes, has anti-inflammatory properties, and is far less likely to cause irritation. [6]

What To Look For On The Label

You don’t need to read every word on the packaging. Just check for these things.

Broad-Spectrum Protection

The label must say broad-spectrum. This means the sunscreen protects against both UVA rays, which cause skin ageing and deeper skin damage, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn. [2] A sunscreen that only protects against one type is not doing a complete job.

SPF 30 Or Higher

SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks around 98%. [4] The difference between 30 and 50 is smaller than most people assume, but both are adequate. Go for a minimum SPF 30, and SPF 50 if your child will be outdoors for long periods, at the beach, or in water.

There’s no meaningful benefit to SPF 100 or above for everyday use. It gives a false sense of security and often leads people to reapply less frequently than they should.

Water Resistance

If your child is swimming, playing sports, or sweating, you need a water-resistant formula. Water-resistant sunscreens are tested to maintain their SPF protection for either 40 or 80 minutes in water. [2] The label will specify which. After that time or after towel drying, reapply regardless of what the label says.

Fragrance-Free And Hypoallergenic

Children’s skin, particularly in the first few years, is more prone to allergic reactions and contact irritation. Fragrances are one of the most common causes of skin reactions in children. Look for fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products on the label, especially for younger children and those with sensitive skin. [4]

Short And Clean Ingredient List

This one is simple. The shorter the ingredient list, the better. Avoid sunscreens with a long list of chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene for young children. Zinc oxide, as the primary or only active ingredient, is the cleanest and most straightforward option for kids.

What To Avoid

Spray sunscreens seem like a dream when you’re chasing a toddler around. Quick, easy, done. But they’re genuinely not the best choice for younger kids. It’s hard to know if you’ve covered everything evenly, and there’s a real risk of little ones breathing in the aerosol. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically advises against spraying sunscreen directly onto a child’s face. If a spray is all you have, spray it into your hands first and then apply it like a lotion. Save the spray bottles for older kids who can actually cooperate, hold their breath, and close their eyes on command. [7]

Oxybenzone is another one to watch for on the ingredient list, particularly for babies and young children. The human evidence isn’t damning, but the FDA has flagged it as needing more safety research before it can be fully cleared. [5] When you’re dealing with skin that absorbs more than adult skin and a body that’s still developing, the sensible move is to just avoid it. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide sidestep the issue entirely.

And please check the expiry date before you dig out last year’s bottle. Sunscreen degrades over time, and an expired sunscreen won’t give your child the SPF protection the label promises. If it’s been sitting in a bag since last summer, it’s probably time for a new one. A bottle that’s been open for more than a year should go in the bin regardless of what the date says.

How To Apply It Correctly

Most parents apply too little and don’t reapply often enough. Both matter as much as choosing the right product.

Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. This gives the product time to properly bond with the skin. For mineral sunscreens, this matters less since they work immediately but it’s a good habit regardless.

Use enough. The general guideline is about one ounce for a full body application on a child, roughly the amount that fills a shot glass. [2] Don’t be stingy. Most sunscreen failures happen because not enough was applied in the first place.

Cover everywhere. Ears, back of the neck, tops of feet, back of hands, and the hairline are the spots most people miss. If your child will be wearing a swimsuit, apply under the straps because they shift.

Reapply every two hours without exception. And immediately after swimming or heavy sweating, regardless of how much time has passed. [2] One morning application does not protect your child for a full day outdoors.

For the face, use a sunscreen stick around the eye area. It’s easier to apply precisely and won’t run into the eyes with sweat.

Sunscreen Is One Part Of The Picture

This is worth saying clearly. Sunscreen is not the only line of defence, and it shouldn’t be treated as one.

Seek shade during peak UV hours, which are between 10 am and 4 pm when UV radiation is most intense. Dress children in sun-protective clothing with a tight weave, wide-brimmed hats that cover the face, neck, and ears, and UV-protective sunglasses. [3]

Teaching children sun safety habits early, covering up, seeking shade, and wearing hats, is more sustainable long-term than relying entirely on sunscreen. The two approaches together provide significantly better protection than either one alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can I start using sunscreen on my baby?
From six months of age. Before that, protect your baby with clothing, shade, and hats rather than sunscreen. From six months onwards, use a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide as the active ingredient.

Is mineral sunscreen safe for kids with eczema?
Yes. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide are generally the recommended choice for children with eczema or sensitive skin. They don’t sting, have anti-inflammatory properties, and are much less likely to trigger a reaction than chemical alternatives.

How often should I reapply sunscreen to my child?
Every two hours while outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating. One application in the morning is not enough for a full day outside.

Does my child need sunscreen on cloudy days?
Yes. Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate through cloud cover. [2] Cloudy days provide far less protection than most people assume, and sunburns on overcast days are surprisingly common.

Is SPF 50 significantly better than SPF 30 for kids?
SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks around 98%. The difference is small. Both are adequate for most situations. SPF 50 is worth choosing for prolonged outdoor activities, beach days, or high-altitude environments.

Can I use my adult sunscreen on my child?
You can, as long as it’s a mineral formula with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and fragrance-free. The packaging difference between adult and children’s sunscreens is mostly marketing. The ingredients are what matter.

References

Pfahlberg A, Kolmel KF, Gefeller O.
