A healthy tongue is pink with visible papillae (little bumps). Any change of color, shape, size, or texture could indicate possible underlying health issues, locally or systemically.

The tongue functions in chewing, swallowing, speech, & taste. How a tongue is maintained is essential to set the stage for halitosis (bad breath), dry mouth, & bacterial growth.

Kids less than 18 months old can have a proliferation of bacteria on their tongue that might contribute to cavities. Tongue hygiene, like gentle scraping, should start as early as possible to initiate habits to prevent decay.

You can take a soft infant tongue cleaner or use a soft brush. Do not use force. Make tongue cleaning a part of your child's regular brushing routine & encourage them to build the habit that will last them a lifetime.
