Noise-induced hearing loss is growing in the millennial & Gen Z populations largely due to wearing earbuds, attending concerts & festivals, & gaming.

Ear buds push sound directly into the ear canal, resulting in increases the sound level roughly ~9 dB compared to regular speakers. When you are using earbuds at full volume you are hearing damaging sounds within minutes.

Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing), you hear muffled sounds in noise, you experience silence at times, difficulty following conversations and fullness in your ears.

-Don't forget to wear earplugs or earmuffs even in loud settings (concerts, motorsports). -Follow the 60,60 or 50,50 rule - max 60% volume for 60 min or 50% volume for 50 min. -Break for listening: Take a break after 60 min for 10-15 min.

Look for high-fidelity or musician ear plugs that have filters to keep the quality of sound. Foam earplugs help as well. Remember that fit is important! Custom molded or fitted ear plugs are best.

Don't remove wax with a cotton swab - wax protects your ear & save the microsuction for the qualified practitioner. If you are someone that uses earbuds or headphones often, schedule regular hearing checks - app-based screening programs as needed.

- Use your smartphone decibel meters to help you determine what exposure you are concerned with. -Don't go above ~85 dB (and amount of time you use them). -Earplugs or earmuffs when you exceed safe levels of exposure. -Be sure you take a break once in a while from headphones or loud settings. -Get your ears checked regularly & absolutely avoid DIY wax removal.

Hearing loss is increasing among young adults with unsafe listening habits - earbuds, concerts, chemicals in homes and work. It is probably best that you consult with your primary care provider, ENT, or audiologist to have your hearing tested, and think about how to best protect your hearing health as soon as possible.
