The JN.1 variant initiating a wave of new COVID-19 cases in India & abroad. Here is what you need to know about symptoms, severity, testing & strategies for protection nowadays.

JN.1, a subvariant of Omicron identified in August 2023, carries an added L455S mutation and is mainly behind the global COVID surge along with its descendants LF.7 and NB.1.8. Meanwhile, LP.8.1 is the dominant strain in the U.S. and present in parts of Asia but isn’t leading there.

Over 250 active JN.1 cases have been reported in various states in India. However, health authorities say the situation is under control with many cases being mild/low risk

JN.1 symptoms are similar to previous COVID variants and include: -dry cough -fever -sore throat -fatigue -body aches -headache -nasal congestion -loss of taste or smell (less common). Note: If you notice any of these symptoms, see a doctor.

There is a very low risk of serious illness from JN.1, and most of the cases are mild. Individuals in high risk groups such as kids & elder ones should remain vigilant.

Yes. RT-PCR & rapid antigen tests are still able to detect this variant. However, it requires genome sequencing to detect the actual strain of variant (i.e., JN.1).

Yes. JN.1 differs slightly from previous variants but current vaccines still offer protection., especially in reducing the chance of severe illness. If you are immunocompromised or more susceptible, boosters are suggested.

-Wear a mask in crowded spaces -Wash hands frequently -Avoid close contact if not feeling well -Take extra precautions for older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with chronic illness
