Monsoon safety: Tips to protect yourself from dengue

While the rains break the heat, they also increase the possibility of dengue.

Follow these preventive tips that are based on scientific information to keep you and your family safe.

Aedes mosquitoes breed in any stagnant water; pots, buckets, coolers, flower vases or puddles. Unless you empty or cover these containers weekly, you will increase the likelihood of Aedes mosquito exposure.

Remove All Stagnant Water

Apply insect repellents containing DEET 20 - 30%, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and closed shoes to minimize mosquito bites. Light-coloured, breathable fabrics are best worn when mosquitoes are at their peak.

Install fine mesh screens on windows and doors and ensure holes are repaired. Sleep or rest indoors under a mosquito net at all times, especially during the day.

Be aware of early symptoms such as high fever, headache, retro-orbital pain, myalgica, rash, nausea—then seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
