Is your non-stick pan harming your health?

Non-stick cookware, especially that coated with Teflon (PTFE), is popular for easy cooking and cleaning. But did you know that overheating these pans can release harmful chemicals?

When heated above 170°C (340°F), Teflon coatings can break down, releasing toxic fumes containing chemicals like PFAS and traces of PFOA, substances linked to cancer, thyroid issues, and respiratory problems.

Older cookware may still contain PFOA, a chemical phased out in many countries but known to accumulate in the body and increase risks for kidney and testicular cancer.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) warns against cooking on empty non-stick pans or overheating them. They advise:

-Avoid heating pans above 170°C. -Use low to medium heat while cooking.  -Do not preheat empty pans.

Use wooden or silicone utensils to avoid scratching the non-stick surface, which can worsen chemical release. When coatings wear out or peel, it’s time to replace your pan.
