Your liver is key in fat metabolism, controlling blood sugar and detoxification. So when your liver gets overwhelmed, this can trigger weight gain and stubborn belly fat.

Weight (in grams) > 5 – 10% fat means ‘fatty liver’ or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is a silent disease often associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome or metabolic derangement.

An overwhelmed liver cannot properly process fats, glucose, or balance hormones. When your liver cannot metabolize fats & glucose, your insulin sensitivity is reduced. The result is often metabolic slowing and fat storage.

Fatigue, unexpected weight loss or weight gain, pain or discomfort around your abdomen, darkening skin (acanthosis nigricans) and elevation in liver enzymes. These are the first signs of problems.

Weight gain - especially central obesity - promotes liver fat storage. MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease) is common even in "lean" insulin resistant individuals.

Losing just 5%-10% of body weight dramatically decreases liver fat and inflammation. At ≥ 10%, individuals may even reverse early liver damage - including NASH (Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis), before seeing any cirrhosis.

If your symptoms don't resolve or routine bloodwork is showing elevated liver enzymes you need to see your physician. Early diagnosis such as blood test, imaging, or Scans could prevent fibrosis or cirrhosis.

Early fatty liver can be reversed, & prevented by making lifestyle interventions that include weight loss (5% to 10%), balanced eating, exercise, good sleep, and medication management if necessary. By taking care of your liver, you'll be in a better position to manage your weight over the long term.
