Although fiber is vital for healthy digestion and general well-being, excessive consumption might have unanticipated consequences. Here are five ways that consuming too much fiber can harm you.

As fiber passes through your digestive tract, it absorbs water. So, if you consume a lot of fiber without increasing your fluid intake, you risk being dehydrated.

Your gut bacteria break down fiber through a process called fermentation, which produces gas. After consuming meals with a greater than normal fiber content, you might experience gas.

Insoluble fiber speeds up the passage of food through your digestive system. Overconsumption of foods high in insoluble fiber can cause intestinal irritation and result in loose or recurrent excrement.

Diarrhea

When you consume more than the required fiber in your diet you may feel nauseous. This is usually a result of increased gas or bloating caused by an imbalanced intake of fiber.

High fiber intake can sometimes interfere with the absorption of important minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium. This is because fiber can bond to these nutrients, preventing your body from fully utilizing them over time.
