Do you find yourself craving a snack even though you've just eaten? It is really hunger or just 'food noise'. Let's look at what the difference is between them and how to tell them apart.

Real hunger is like a natural alarm system of your body signaling when you need to refill on nutrition. It is often accompanied by clear physical signals, such as weakness, stomach rumbling, or dizziness.

Unlike hunger, food noise or craving comes from your mind rather than the body. It can occur shortly after you've eaten and is often triggered by emotions or boredom, or even seeing ads.

Hunger grows slowly, and cravings are sudden & impulsive. While hunger can be satisfied by any food, cravings often desire a specific food. If ignored, these cravings can disappear after some time, unlike hunger.

From billboards to ads on your phones, food noise is everywhere these days. This feeling makes you want to eat even when you're not actually hungry, and often leaves you feeling guilty after indulging.

Learning to differentiate hunger from food noise is a significant step toward mindful eating. When you feel a craving, take a pause, sip some water, and consider whether it is a physical sensation or your mind playing games.
