A rise in Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases among children in Delhi and Haryana is creating concerns and awareness.

Painful small blisters or ulcers that occur internally in the mouth on the tongue, gums, or throat. These can result in difficulties in eating and drinking.

Tiny red spots that sometimes blister, located on the palms, soles, and sometimes buttocks or knees. Often itchy or painful.

Mouth ulcers & throat pain often result in drooling, avoiding food, or difficulty swallowing. Watch for drooling or that the child avoids food in the mouth due to pain.

Unusual tiredness, fussiness, irritability in children; they will often refuse food and be less active. These non-specific symptoms often accompany the rash & mouth sores

Handwashing with soap (especially after toileting/diapering), cleaning + disinfecting toys + surfaces. Do not share utensils, towels, or cups.

Keep children with symptoms at home & provide proper rest. Add plenty of fluids (cold drinks, popsicles), & thin regular foods to soften the diet when needed. Steer clear of acidic or spicy foods that can irritate mouth sores. Do not use pain relief medications unless advised by a medical professional.

The best way to prevent HFMD is early identification, home care & good hygiene practices. Watch for symptoms & call your doctor or pediatrician if symptoms worsen or the child is becoming dehydrated. Stay calm, & visit online resources to read, watch, or listen to HFMD.
