We’ve all been there, you wake up, look in the mirror, and those dark circles are still staring back at you like they own the place.

The thing is, dark circles aren’t always just about staying up too late. Here’s what could actually be behind them, and what might finally help.

Sure, you might be in bed for 8 hours, but if you’re scrolling at 1 a.m. or waking up a bunch during the night, your skin will show it. Try winding down without screens, dim the lights, and give your body a rest.

Dehydration can make the skin under your eyes look hollow and shadowy. Keep a water bottle nearby and sneak in hydrating foods like cucumber or watermelon, they do wonders for that “refreshed” look.

Low iron or certain vitamins can make dark circles worse. Think leafy greens, nuts, eggs, and lentils, or get a quick blood test to see if you’re low on anything.

The sun breaks down collagen, which can make the under-eye area look thinner and darker. A dab of sunscreen under your eyes and a good pair of sunnies can go a long way.

If you’re always rubbing your eyes due to allergies or battling sinus congestion, the swelling and blood vessel dilation can exacerbate the circles. Treating the root problem can really help brighten things up.

Dark circles aren’t always a quick fix. Sometimes they’re your body’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s off.” Listen to the signs, treat the cause, and your mirror might finally start smiling back at you.
