Oily foods making you sick? Here's what is going on.

If there was a time that you enjoyed fried food but now feel bloated or nauseated after eating it, your body may be trying to communicate something to you!

The gallbladder helps digest fats. If you have an inflamed gallbladder or gallstones, consuming fats may lead to pain, bloating, or nausea. If you continue to experience these symptoms, see your doctor!

Bile works to emulsify (break down) fats. A sluggish liver or blocked bile duct can lead to poor bile flow, contributing to your intolerance to greasy foods and difficulties with digestion.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and gastritis may make it worse with big doses of animal fat or high-fat foods, resulting in stomach pain, acidity, and/or disruptions in bowel movements.

Some individuals develop intolerances or sensitivities to the oils used in cooking or the coating of the fried food (e.g., additives)—leading to headaches, or fatigue.

An unfriendly gut microbiome can also reduce fat digestion. If the meal is very greasy, this may cause aggravation of your symptoms afterwards, such as bloating, gas and sluggishness.
