Yawning can wake you up! Blood flow & oxygen flow increase, which helps with attention & alertness during moments of sleepiness.

Although debated, but there is some evidence that yawning was evolved to bring in more air (oxygen) & expel carbon dioxide to assist you breath more efficiently.

Boredom has the opposite effect of increasing stimulation, so yawning may help reset whatever attentional focus you maintain to briefly re-engage your brain.
