“My daddy strongest” went the ad.

Who doesn’t like to think so? But if you are the dad, then you need to ask yourself are you really healthy?

Given the current scenario of excessive stress, inactive lifestyle, lack of sleep and exercise, there is a high risk of lifestyle problems in men in India. Moreover, if you are obese, have a desk job, have unhealthy eating habits,  or have a lot of stress, then here are few conditions you need to be aware of.

So this Father’s Day, let’s pledge to stay fit and healthy with these tips.

Hypertension: If you are above 40 years of age and have a stressful job, it is important to keep a tab on your blood pressure. High blood pressure or hypertension not only increases the pressure of blood on the blood vessels but also puts you at high risk of cardiac complications and stroke. As blood pressure shows no symptoms, it is difficult to know about it beforehand.

Goal: Do check your blood pressure every year even if you are not at risk of hypertension or heart problems.

Diabetes: Diabetes, is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing epidemics in India. If you are obese, have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25 or have a family history of diabetes, it is wise to get tested for diabetes. Diabetes is a silent disease and it can show no symptoms until it starts to affect other organs of the body such as kidneys, eyes, brain and feet.

Goal: Eat a balanced diet and start exercising to lower your risk of diabetes and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Thyroid disease: It is common misconception that only women are at risk of thyroid disease. Getting a thyroid profile done is essential even for men as it helps you to understand the functioning of the thyroid gland, which control overall metabolism.

Goal: Get your thyroid levels checked as a part of your annual health check-up without fail.

Bone and joint problems: As you age, you become more susceptible to bone and joint problems. One of the major causes for this could be the lack of Vitamin D as lack of this vitamin lowers calcium absorption. This not only lowers the bone mineral density but also puts you at risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.

Goal: Ensure you get your daily dose of calcium and vitamin D either from diet or supplements to prevent its deficiency.

Hair loss: Excessive hair fall is not just a common concern for women but for men as well. Alopecia, commonly known as baldness is one of the biggest problems for men. Hair fall can be due to many reasons right from lack of nutrients from diet to hormonal changes in the body. However, if you experience severe hair loss, it’s time to consult a doctor.

Goal: Eat healthy and get your hair tested for scalp problems. You can also use these hair care products to keep your hair healthy.

Oral cancer: It is one of the top three cancers reported in India. And one of the common causes of oral cancer in India is cigarette smoking. Be it smoking or chewing tobacco, it can not only impact the oral health but also increase the risk of cancer.

Goal: Quit smoking and stop chewing tobacco to stay healthy and lower your risk of cancer.
