Amritarishta

Amritarishta
Amritarishta, also known as Amrutharishtam or Amritarishtam, is a polyherbal Ayurvedic liquid formula advised as a choice of remedy in different types of fevers. It is used as an antioxidant providing aid in the treatment of fever, cough, and cold[1]. The main ingredient of Amritarishta is Tinospora Cordifolia, ‘Guguchi or Giloy’, which adds antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties to the medicine, helpful in treating various illnesses. It also contains Dashmool, a mix of 10 herbs, adding multiple properties to the overall mix.

According to Ayurveda, Amritarishta is known to have Javarghana (antipyretic) property which helps in reducing fever. Apart from that, its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) properties also indirectly help in controlling fever by digesting Ama (toxic remains in the body due to improper digestion). These digestive properties also help to manage the loss of appetite, thirst, bloating, and flatulence. Amritarishta also has Rasayana (rejuvenating) property which helps to increase immunity and promote longevity.

Amritarishta is available in liquid/syrup form. You can take 15-20ml Amritarishta or as directed by the physician to get relief from fever. Mix it with equal amounts of lukewarm water to dilute its taste a little. Take it once or twice a day, preferably after meals.

Amritarishta is generally well tolerated and does not have any side effects when taken in the recommended dose. However, it is advisable to consult the doctor before using Amritarishta.

Benefits of Amritarishta

1. Chronic fever:
Chronic or persistent fevers are the type of fever that lasts more than 10 to 14 days. It could be caused due to a mild infection or chronic condition. As per Ayurveda, there are two factors that can lead to high fever, the first is Ama (toxic remains in the body due to improper digestion) and the second is any foreign particle or organisms that invade the body. Amritarishta helps in reducing fever due to its Javarghana (antipyretic) property. Its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) properties also help reduce fever by improving digestion and absorption of food, preventing the formation of Ama. It also improves immunity to fight foreign particles or organisms due to its Rasayana property.

Tip
- Take 15-20ml Amritarishta or as directed by the physician
- Mix with an equal quantity of lukewarm water
- Have it twice a day, preferably after meals
# This will help provide relief from the symptoms of chronic fever.

2. Cough and cold:
A cough is quite a common ailment, which usually happens with the cold. It is commonly known as Kapha disorder in Ayurveda. A cough is generally caused by the accumulation of mucus in the respiratory tract. Amritarishta is an effective herb in managing cough and cold. Amritarishta controls cough, releases mucus, clears air passages, thus allowing the patient to breathe freely. This is due to its Kapha balancing property.

3. Liver disease:
Liver problems could be due to genetic reasons or as a result of various factors that damage the liver, such as viruses, excess alcohol use, and obesity. Amaritarishta is a well-known Ayurvedic classical preparation which helps to promote liver health. It is very effective against jaundice, liver enlargement, and other liver disorders. It protects the liver from infection and maintains its proper function. Along with that, it improves digestion because of its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) properties which aid in improving overall liver conditions.

4. Weak immunity:
Our immune system is the first line of defense against various infections. Weak immunity can affect our body’s ability to fight against invading viruses, making the body susceptible to severe infections. The concept of immunity has been widely described in detail in Ayurvedic texts as Vyadhikshamatva (immunomodulatory). Amritarishta helps increase immunity and promote longevity due to its Rasayana (rejuvenating) property. It helps fight against infections in the body and prevent recurrent seasonal infections.

5. Loss of appetite:
Loss of appetite is a condition in which there is little or no urge to eat. In Ayurveda, loss of appetite is compared with Agnimandya (weak digestion). Loss of appetite is caused by an aggravation of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. Other than that, psychological factors can also lead to incomplete digestion of food, causing insufficient secretion of gastric juice in the stomach which results in appetite loss. Amaritarishta enhances the Pachak Agni (digestive fire) which helps digest the food easily. Digestive stimulants like Amritarishta are often used in Ayurveda to treat loss of appetite. They help manage the loss of appetite, thirst, bloating, and flatulence.
